Teach Your Kids About Jesus (Lessons for Kids about the Life, Teachings and Ministry of Jesus Christ) Review by Kelly Burgess

Teach Your Kids About Jesus is a bible study program for kids ages four through twelve that is intended to teach them about the life, teachings, and ministry of Jesus. It's also intended to help parents feel more comfortable and confident in introducing the life of Jesus to their children in a way that they can truly understand. It's broken down into eight topical sections that take you from the birth to the ascension of Jesus and includes a complete answer key for all comprehension questions in the back of the book. It's available to order from various online booksellers for $14.95.

The book contains one hundred thirty-eight single-page lessons that are concise but filled with the wisdom and knowledge of Jesus. Each bite-sized lesson conveys simple, basic foundational truth that is easy for kids to digest. Each lesson begins with a short scripture verse followed by an explanation and four to six questions which the teacher can use to check for essential comprehension of the ideas in the lesson. The questions are not too complicated. They entail mostly fill-in-the-blank, true/false, or fact-based questions that just check for basic understanding. This makes it ideal for very young children, children who have a short attention span, or children who are being initially introduced to the gospel message.

I used these lessons with my nine-year old son who has ADHD. He is eager to know and love Jesus, but he is easily distracted and has a relatively short attention span for a child his age. So I was particularly interested in using this with him to see if it helped him grow in his knowledge and understanding of the New Testament without requiring so much time that he couldn't pay attention to it long enough to garner any lasting comprehension of the material.

I'm really pleased with how concise the lessons are. They get right to the point, beginning with scripture and ending with a meaningful message about how that scripture applies to our everyday lives. I could really see how the program's aim was to help children know and love Jesus and carry that relationship with them in all that they do. My son did so well with these lessons, and when he was up for it, we were able to complete more than one in a sitting. But it was wonderful to have small chunks of information so we could use the lessons to match his level of focus for any given day. It was great to see him eager to listen and quick to respond with what he'd learned.

This is definitely a tool that we will continue to use to match our own unique pace of bible study in our homeschool. It's also good to know that there are links to additional free resources that we can access any time through the company's website.
