The Business Course (Standard Version) Review by Brandy Brockhausen

John Hunt
http://www.thebusinesscourse.com

The Business Course is an online program aimed at high school students. It consists of 16 sessions that are further broken down into individual video-based lessons. The time for each video session varies, with some longer sessions taking 45 minutes or more. The sections also include assignments you can download and print. The Standard Version costs $99, and there is also a Mentor Version available as well.

To access assignments, students simply log in, click on whatever session they are working on, and then view the videos for that session. This course offers a broad range of topics that cover many aspects of starting and running a business. Included in the course are sessions on budgeting, how to set up a business, record keeping, marketing, and much more. I particularly liked that it included a mid-term review and a section with case studies where students could look at the profiles of different businesses and use them as learning opportunities.

My 10th grade son used this course, completing one section per week. I would log in and look at the length of each video, and then determine how much he would complete each day. We usually broke the longer videos into two sections, so the average time for the videos was around 25 minutes, which was perfect for his attention span. It was nice to able to access the course from anywhere using our laptop, because he could still do his work even if we were on the go.

He enjoyed watching the videos and felt Mr. Hunt did a very good job of explaining each concept. I was impressed with how clear he made everything, including the business terminology, which can get quite confusing. I also appreciated the ability to print out the assignments and allow my son to go back and watch the videos again if he needed to get more information to complete something.

The website gives you a good breakdown for how to set up the course if you want to use it over a full year of schooling, with recommendations for when to include vacations, which I found very helpful too. It makes it much easier to plan for the school year that way and see how this course will fit in with the rest of your subjects.

I think The Business Course is a good option for high school students with an interest in business in general. If you have a student who wants to start a business, or pursue a business degree in college, this course will give them a strong foundation to build on.
