I love books that are illustrated by the author, like this one! It's so wonderful to see images from the author's imagination giving their words life. Sea Horse, Run! is about a brave sea horse that refuses to abandon his friend, Coral, even though he's been warned by several fish that a sea dragon is coming to destroy the reef. In fact, it turns out that the sea dragon is another sea horse that looks like seaweed floating in the ocean!
Tammy Carter Bronson has written a beautiful children's tale and illustrated it with magnificent dry-brush watercolor artwork! This hardcover book with thick, glossy pages retails for $17, and it is worth every penny. This is the perfect book to read aloud before a trip to the aquarium. The book is designed for 3 to 8-year-olds, and it could easily be read independently by beginning readers. The author obviously researched the subject of sea horses carefully, as all the illustrations and information are scientifically accurate. In fact, our family has previously had the pleasure of observing the amazing sea dragon first-hand at the Monterey Bay Aquarium, and we enjoyed reading this book that reinforced what we learned there.
The last few pages of this book include information about several varieties of sea horses, especially those illustrated in this book; a map showing where the major coral reefs are located worldwide; and information on where sea dragons live. Since most sea dragons live along the southern coast of Australia, there is a beautiful two-page spread of artwork depicting many of the animals living in Australia's coral reef.
I highly recommend this book for its amazing artwork and educational value. This should be a must-read for every elementary student studying oceanography. You'll be glad you read this book, especially in preparation for an aquarium visit!
