Geography Songs, History Songs of the United States, and States and Capitals Songs Review by Diane Wheeler

The slogan for Audio Memory Publishing is "You Never Forget What You Sing!" As a couple that can sing the jingle to Gilligan's Island, whether we want to remember it or not, we would agree! There are many facts that are important for students to know, whether in geography, history, math or grammar, and Audio Memory provides tapes and CDs that are a fun and efficient way to make memory work easier.

Geography Songs includes 27 songs: British Isles, W. Europe, Former USSR, Scandinavia, S. Europe, E. Europe, Middle East, Africa, S. Asia, S.E. Asia, Asia, Australia, New Zealand, Oceania, S. America, Central America, Mexico, W. Indies, five sections of the United States, Canada, Greenland, Continents and Oceans and the Solar System. This is a good introduction to all of these topics. It also includes a map for marking names and for coloring. If you fill in each region as it is memorized, you will have a colorful reminder of all that you have learned.

History Songs of the United States has 11 songs that span from 1492 through the early 1990s. There are songs about exploration, the early settlers, and the build-up towards the Revolutionary War. The songs move on to the making of a new nation, the expansion west, and the Civil War. The late 1800's include immigration, invention, and the treatment of the first Americans. The early 1900's focus on the first airplane, the first car, World War I, Prohibition, women voting and the flight of Charles Lindbergh. The years 1929 -1945 includes the Great Depression, the Dust Bowl, and World War II. Moving on to 1950 -1969, we hear about the Korean and Vietnam Wars, the space program, the deaths of John Kennedy and Martin Luther King; and, finally, in 1971-1991 there is the end of the Vietnam War, Watergate, the computer age, the fall of communism and the Gulf War. These songs provide a sequence of events in our country's history, the names of some of the key players, and an easy way to memorize dates that might otherwise be tedious.

States and Capitals Songs are songs that go through each region of the United States, singing the state and capital names twice. The song is then played again, but the first time through the name is left for us to sing, and the follow-up echo provides the answer.

For driving in the car, for a quiet afternoon activity, or a fun break from book and seatwork, these CD's are a great choice. Memorization does not need to mean misery and sweaty palms. Do you have some facts you need your students to memorize? Look up Audio Memory Publishing at www.audiomemory.com, or call them at 1800-365-SING, because "You Never Forget What You Sing!"
