OWI Robotics creates educational robot kits to provide a hands-on approach to learning science, technology, engineering, and mathematics through real-world applications. The Agent 992 Robot Kit proves to be effective in teaching children by investigating, creating, and taking ownership of their learning. It is recommended for ages eight and above and is currently priced at $29.95.

The Agent 992 Robot Kit has 140 assembly pieces packaged neatly and organized by colored pieces on four plastic sprues. The instructions book recommends that builders clip the parts from the sprues as they assemble the robot. I appreciated that the recommendation was noted at the beginning of the instructions book, as many children are eager to prepare the pieces before starting projects. This allows for a smooth assembly by keeping the work area neat and clutter-free. The kit requires four AAA batteries, which are not included. Aside from batteries, cutters (to clip the pieces), and a small screwdriver, the kit includes everything needed.

Once assembled, the robot has three investigative modes: forward, auto-navigate, and gesture control. The eyes of the robot will change color depending on the mode used. The finished size measures approximately 7 inches long and 5 inches wide. It is light and compact for storing, displaying, or taking on the go.

Though I intended to build this alongside my eleven-year-old daughter, she took control of the project, and I became the observer. The kit came with an assembly and instruction manual that was clear and organized step by step. However, with multiple pieces with similar characteristics, it required attention to the tiniest of details.

The kit was impressively challenging enough to demand my child’s attention to investigate how pieces should be shifted or popped into place and how wires should be connected. It took about an hour and a half to complete it and about fifteen minutes to learn how the modes work and what makes them different. Assembling a functioning robot that moved at her hand gestures gave my child a great sense of accomplishment and further piqued her interest to try more advanced engineering projects.

What I appreciated the most about this kit was the neat packing, clear instructions, and difficulty level. Recommended for ages eight and above, younger engineering enthusiasts can assemble the Agent 992 Robot Kit with a helper. It is also an excellent beginner STEM kit for all teens or adults with little experience with robot kits.

Overall, I was impressed, and I highly recommend this product to any parent or teacher looking to find a hands-on learning approach or a fun way to spend time together. The concept of learning through investigation empowers children to take charge in problem-solving, and Agent 992 is promising to spark that interest.
