The children's book, What Does a Police Horse Do? is a very well-done book featuring both two and four-legged officers of the Lancaster, Pennsylvania Mounted Police Department. Throughout the 36 pages of this book, readers follow along as a horse officer named Liam explains his job and how he works with his partner, Officer Eric Lukacs.

The book presents the perspective from the eyes of the horse.  Liam shows off his badge that is just like we would see real officers wearing because Liam is a real police officer.  Liam takes readers through how he gets ready in the morning, what he does during the day, and how he finishes at night.  Each page presents a new, interesting tidbit about the life of a police horse.  We found it interesting that Liam must practice walking over tarps and pool noodles to practice walking over anything that might be found on patrol.

Liam introduces his friends that work with him including other horse officers and canine officers.  We learned that it is much easier for a mounted officer to see what is going on in a crowd because they are higher up than everyone else.

The pictures in the book are real photos.  My children enjoyed this much more than if they were illustrated.  The photos are very well done and show what it is like throughout a day in Liam's life. I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in horses or police officers.  I think it would be beneficial for classroom use as well to share with small children.
