Once children learn to spell well, I believe it is a good idea to start incorporating vocabulary. This can be done many ways, but having a curriculum to rely on, gives me a slight sense of peace. Over the last couple of months, my oldest daughter has been working through Wordly Wise 3000® Book 10.We are not new to this vocabulary curriculum, we have been using it for the past two years. However, we were not familiar with the fourth edition before this review. It is designed for a classroom setting but can be easily used by homeschoolers.

We received the complete Wordly Wise 3000® Book 10 Set.Included in the set is the teacher's resource book and the student book. This new edition provides direct academic vocabulary instruction.

The teacher's resource book is a spiral-bound book that consists of 200 pages. In it, you will find the welcome section, vocabulary extensions, reproducible masters, answer keys, and a word list.

Welcome Section - gives a brief introduction to Wordly Wise 3000®, a pacing guide, and sample layout of the student book.

The Pacing Guide gives three options for weekly teaching plans, these can be easily tweaked to fit your child's need.

Vocabulary Extension - are short activities in each lesson that pulls a word from the word list for the child to dig deeper. This section is meant to be done in a group, but my daughter and I did it together.

Master Reproducibles - is where you will find pages that you are able to photocopy for your child. Rate your word knowledge can be given before each lesson so that the child can rate how well they know each word before learning about them. There is also the secondary passage for each lesson, the lesson reviews, and the tests.

Answer Keys - is the place to go when you need the answers to the lessons, activities in the student book, lesson reviews, and the tests.

Word List - has all the words taught in this book. They are listed in alphabetical order for easy reference, and the lesson they were introduced in, is in parentheses.

The Student Book consists of 20 lessons that are broken down into five exercises. At the end of each lesson is a fun and fascinating facts passage and the vocabulary extension. Each lesson is set up for a five-day school week however, this is something that can be easily manipulated to fit your family's need. Some words have a small icon of two people with a conversation bubble above them. That just means there's a simple activity or discussion for this word that needs to be done with a partner. It will explain what do besides the icon. My daughter and I did these together.

After every four lessons, there is a short review covering the previous four lesson.

Last, but not least there's a pronunciation key at the end of the book, and the same word list that is in the teacher's resource book.

Now let's get to the good part.Wordly Wise recommend that you begin your child in the book that corresponds to their grade level. The vocabulary that is used in the passages provided is written in accordance with The Lexile Framework. Therefore, they have the secondary passages. It still has rich content but is written at a lower Lexile measure. There is a link provided in the teacher's book if you want to check to see your child's level. I did not test my daughter prior to selecting book 10, I just went with her grade level.

We did not follow the suggested schedule at all and that is ok.I don't have anything against the way the schedule is written, it's just not how I wanted to use it for us.So, before each lesson, I had my daughter complete the Rate Your Word Knowledge. This took her about 5 minutes to complete, and it helped us to see which words she was already familiar with and which words were new to her.

This is how a typical week looks for us.

Monday, she completes the rate your word knowledge, then goes over all her words for the lesson, after that we do the activity for the words with the icon together, and finally, she does exercise A.This may sound like a lot, but it doesn't take more than 30 minutes.

Tuesday, she just does exercise B.

Wednesday, she does exercise C and D.

Thursday, she does exercise E, reads the fun and fascinating facts, and the lesson review exercise if I feel she needs the extra practice.

Friday, we do the Vocabulary Extension together before she takes her test.

She also spends some time each day, if she feels the need, to study on Quizlet.Wordly Wise 3000® partners with Quizlet! Quizlet is a fun way to study and master the vocabulary that is being learned. There are games, electronic flashcards, and other ways to really master the words for each lesson. You can even hear how to pronounce each word. That is helpful because some lessons have large words.

You can purchase the Wordly Wise 3000® 4th Edition Student Book 10 for $13.95 and the Wordly Wise 3000® 4th Edition Teacher's Resource Book 10 for $69.00

Both my daughter and I love this new edition of Wordly Wise 3000®.I appreciate the way they focus on learning the meaning of a word based on context.I would recommend this vocabulary curriculum to homeschooling families, homeschool co-ops, and even schools. In fact, adults may even benefit from it. I know I am. I have learned a few new words as I have helped my daughter.
