Words, words, words! We use words all day long, in reading, writing, speaking, and listening. The words you use can convey impressions of you as a person, and the words you understand can enhance or limit your ability to take in new ideas and concepts. A person’s understanding of vocabulary can affect their literacy, which affects their ease of higher learning. Clearly, words are important, and the breadth of your understanding of vocabulary words can affect many divergent aspects of your life. As a homeschooling parent, you probably wish to have your students expand their vocabulary year after year. Wordly Wise 3000 Book 9 (fourth edition) set of teacher and student booksis a great tool for you to use to help your student learn and master vocabulary.

The Wordly Wise 3000 program is not just rote instruction or flashcard memorization of different words and their definitions. It is much more and includes a student workbook, a teacher book, and even online linked Quizlet sessions.Twenty chapters each introduce students to fifteen words and their definitions. Students learn the vocabulary words as well as their parts of speech—and their usage as different parts of speech (for instance if they learn the noun, they learn to use the accompanying adjective forms, etc.) Students use the words in sentences, read them in paragraphs, choose the correct precise interpretations, and answer questions about the word as used in a paragraph. In some places, there are fun facts about the words or their roots, which also help to cement the meanings in the mind of the student. This Wordly Wise 3000 program also emphasizes learning to interpret words using context clues, parts of the word, and by looking them up in references such as the dictionary. These are great life skills that will be used on into the future when unfamiliar words are encountered.

My family has used Wordly Wise curricula before, and much of what I have described to this point is what we have had in the previous books. My 9th grade daughter and I have recently used the Wordly Wise 3000 book 9 fourth edition set of teacher and student books, and there are some additions which were new to us. One of the neat extras is a Quizlet package available for this exact book set. The information to access the Wordly Wise 3000 study set is found in the student book and allows the user to reaffirm their understanding of each word list through online quizzes, flashcards, games, and more.

This edition has a self-evaluation of word familiarity before each chapter, as well as a group activity at the end of each chapter. I like the idea of the group activity (chat with partner or group about a writing prompt which includes a vocabulary word from the chapter then write a few sentences to answer that question), but for our homeschooling family (one child only doing this book) it is not as necessary or practical. For classroom use, however, this would be great.

The teacher’s book contains all the reproducible masters that the teacher will need, including the tests as well as the answers. There are instructions and tips for teachers within this sturdy spiral-bound Teacher’s Resource Book.

This curriculum (student and teacher book) of Wordly Wise 3000 book 9, fourth edition, is changed up a little from the earlier editions, so if you think you know all there is to Wordly Wise, this new edition might be worth a closer look! It is filled with vocabulary words and the tools to learn and retain these words and definitions; it would be a great addition to your homeschool or classroom.
