I have heard so much about Shurley English on various Classical Education forums that I was eager to review it. I was not disappointed!

If you are intimidated by teaching grammar and writing, this program is the perfect solution. Because the lessons are scripted, you don't have to figure out how to present a concept. It's all right there for you.

Shurley English uses all learning styles with their "hear it, say it, do it" method to English grammar. The catchy jingles, which teach grammar concepts, are easy to follow and take little time to review. Over the past two weeks, my daughter has memorized several, taking only five minutes per day. The Question and Answer Flow, unique to Shurley, is a series of questions asked about the sentence. The answers reveal the role each word plays in the sentence. By using the Question and Answer Flow, your child can easily analyze complete sentences painlessly. Daily practice of both the jingles and the Question and Answer flow ensures your student will obtain mastery of the concepts.

Shurley English not only teaches grammar, it teaches writing and vocabulary as well. The writing program begins with sentence and paragraph building and eventually teaches expository, persuasive, narrative, descriptive, report, creative, letter, and journal writing, depending on the level your student is in.

My favorite part of Shurley English is the vocabulary component. Each week students are assigned eight vocabulary words to look up, define, and use in a sentence. Then they must determine whether the words are antonyms or synonyms. This teaches them dictionary skills as well as enhancing vocabulary development.

The complete Shurley English program has seven levels. Each one has 32 weeks of five lessons per week. The lessons take approximately 20-45 minutes to teach, but you could split the longer lessons if necessary.

Shurley English is a wonderful change from traditional grammar programs and is worth a look. Please check out the website for more information and a detailed scope and sequence.
