Learning to Spell Through Copywork Book B contains “advanced spelling and phonics rules” is the second book in the series of “twaddle-free” spelling practice from the Charlotte Mason method of learning. It is 33 pages in a softcover consumable book containing 30 weeks of lessons that are busywork free, rule-following words to study and learn. Each week is just one page, with five sentences to copy down using the 10-12 words that are a part of that week's lesson. Each book in the series is labeled with a letter instead of a grade level, encouraging you to choose the level that fits your child's needs. Learning to Spell Through Copywork Book B retails for $10.95. The book is complete, without need for a teacher key. It contains black and white pages without pictures or distractions.

On Monday, I would read the new rule to my six-year-old. Then he would read the words for the week to me, to be sure he understood the rule he was learning. Then he reads the sentence to me, then copies it down in his book. The next four days we followed the same pattern, with me reading the rule, he read the words and that day's sentence, then he copied it down in his book. We have a test on the words on Friday after he finishes the entire week of work.

My son did very well with this. He is reading proficiently but tends to spell very phonetically. He hasused a different spelling program previously and far preferred Learning to Spell Through Copywork for its simplicity. I've never before ventured into the Charlotte Mason method and am really appreciating it, particularly for the lack of busywork. I found that he learned well, was not frustrated with the time or attention required, and it was the perfect level to match his skill.

Having now experienced the simple approach to education offered by Charlotte Mason methods and Queens Homeschool in particular, I find myself at a crossroads. I'm not certain where it will go from here. It seems that this approach both works for my child and for our busy homeschool with many students. I have yet to decide if we will continue with this or go back to what we've done before, but I do like it – a lot. I definitely recommend it, especially for the homeschooler who wants to educate without fuss or unnecessary work. It's a straightforward program without any frills that keeps things simple.
