Charlotte Mason held that “Music is a necessary part of education” Music Study with the Masters makes it easy to enjoy and appreciate music together as a family.

Charlotte Mason was a British educator in the late 1800s and early 1900s who used rich literature and “living books” rather than textbooks to give a broad education. A “living book” is a book that engages the reader and draws him or her into learning more about a subject; and they are written by someone with a passion for the material.

With Music Study with the Masters you have everything you need to teach music appreciation successfully. The Haydn portfolio includes step-by-step instructions for doing this music study, two full-length CDs of Haydn’s music, listen and learn ideas that will add to your understanding of the music, a personal portrait of the composer, a timeline to show where the composer fits in history, a biography of Haydn, and recommended resources for further study. The portfolio is non-consumable, so you’ll only need one for your family.

As a piano teacher, I was glad to see a list of common Italian musical terms within the portfolio, and used this as a review for my own children who play piano. While listening to the music, I encouraged my girls to describe what the various pieces made them think of; and through this study they were able to study single works until they understood his style. Just a few minutes once a week and the simple guidance of this book will influence and enrich your children more than you can imagine.
