Lone Star Learning’s “Get the Picture – Visual Verbs – Primary Set 1” are for students in the primary grades, specifically students who are new readers or currently learning to read.

The set features 42 large flashcards. (They measure approximately 11” x 4.25.) The cards are in full color and on coated card stock—offering visual reminders of the location or direction of objects.

Each of the cards features a verb with a visual clue to the word. Some examples include:

  • The word “think” in a thought cloud
  • The word “walk” with feet on the bottom of the letter “k”
  • The word “wash” with soap and bubbles on it
  • The word “wish” made to look like it is in the stars and being “wished” on

I have a little girl who is going to be six yearsold next month. She is reading basic words and, therefore, thoroughly enjoyed this flashcard set as she could try to learn “bigger” and more “grown-up” words. Each of the words was taken from the “Dolch Sight Words List” which is a commonly used set of sight words designed to identify the most commonly read words. These cards are designed to teach children words through sight-reading.

These cards could be used in a homeschool setting, or parents whose children are in school and in need of a little extra help in the reading department could use them with their student after school hours.

Each card also has a QR code that you can scan using your smartphone. This brings you to the Lone Star Learning website where the same card is featured in an animated setting. For example, using the examples above:

  • The word “think” in a cloud that is growing
  • The word “walk” with legs that are moving
  • The word “wish” has a shooting star
  • The word “wash” actually looking like it is being washed

Overall, this is simply a high-quality product that will offer your new reader an opportunity to get a jump on commonly used verbs. We loved these cards!
