Twelve Bright Trumpets Review by Nancy Wagner

This book is a fascinating look at life of people in the Middle Ages of various social strata from peasant to high-borne. Each story is tied to historical places and events and shows how events affected even the common people.

This book has 12 stories starting with Britain under Roman occupation about 350 AD. Each story is individual, but chronological and related in some way to the story before and/or after it, though they may be separated by many years. Christianity is also brought into the stories as appropriate for the time and place of the story. Just prior to each story is a 2-3-page summary of the historical context of the story.

I have learned a lot about the Middles Ages that I never knew. Although I must confess, I thought history totally boring when I was in school, especially "ancient" history which at the time meant everything before the 1900s. But my 9-year-old son and I both found these stories very historical and interesting. The level of reading would probably be upper elementary or middle schools, but makes a good read-aloud for younger children.
