Written by Rebecca Emberly and illustrated by her father, Ed Emberly, The Lion and the Mice is a wonderful take on an old story for beginning readers. The mouse is lost and gets stuck in the lion’s cage, when the lion wakes and spies her. The mouse tells the lion that she’ll help him one day, as long as he doesn’t eat her. The lion, doubtful, lets her go and falls back to sleep. He is woken up by the mouse and all her friends, and they unlock the lion’s cage and set him free. The lion and the mice become friends.

The illustrations in this book are quirky and colorful, and are sure to attract attention. The sentences are short and perfect for new readers. The moral of the story (that little people can help big people) is great for children. If you’re looking for books to add to your beginning reader’s collection, I recommend you take a look at The Lion and the Mice.
