Anak the Eskimo Boy is a small hardback book of 90 pages that is recommended for ages 9-10. Black-and-white drawings illustrate the story. The author, Piet Prins, is billed as "one of the best-loved authors of juvenile literature in the Netherlands."

This book tells the story of the coming of age of a young Eskimo boy. His grandfather, steeped in the old traditions, tells the old stories about the "Spirits," but Anak's parents have been in touch with a missionary and have put their faith in God. When a crisis occurs, they put their trust in God and see the answer to their fervent prayers.

Young children (and others) will find this book fascinating because it tells of a way of life we are not familiar with. It is a very entertaining story, and the reader learns much about Eskimo life and traditions. This book would make an excellent addition to a homeschool reading list and would be wonderful fodder for a book report.

I am thrilled to add this book to my bookshelf and to my homeschoolers' reading list.
