Dog is in search of the perfect home. On his quest, he sets out to travel the world to see how other dogs live before deciding on what's just right for him. He hops on a bus, catches a train, sails on a ship, and hitches a ride with a couple of unsuspecting farmers as he travels from country to country. He meets a Newfoundland (in Newfoundland!), an English bulldog in London, a poodle in France, a borzoi (Russian hunting dog), and several more canine friends. As he visits with them, he learns a bit about each dog's signature behavior and physical characteristics. For example, the Rhodesian Ridgeback hunts lions, and the Chinese shar-pei's blue-black tongue is "meant to scare off the evil spirits." Frankly, I struggled with a bit with this line in the book. I understand that it is part of the "folklore" associated with this breed, but I can see younger children asking questions or being concerned about the presence of "evil spirits." Depending on your sensitivity to these matters, you may want to be prepared to explain this to your child.

Though a little discouraged, Dog returns from his travels to his old comfortable neighborhood. Reading an ad in the newspaper, he sees that a very prominent family needs a dog. He sets out to win their hearts. Can Dog find his perfect home? "YES, HE CAN!" Have you figured out Dog's new address? It's at the White House with the Obama family! This is a colorful book with interesting facts about several dog breeds. If you're a dog lover, you'll enjoy traveling along with Dog on his way to his perfect home and loving family.
