Daily Grammar Practice is composed of a student workbook and a teacher guide with answer keys, designed for use over one school year. Each workbook and teacher guide is designated for one particular grade level, from first grade through college. I reviewed the Daily Grammar Practice for Grade 8.

This program requires the student to work with one sentence each week, completing a different assignment related to that sentence each day. It is designed to take a few minutes each day, like taking a vitamin. In addition to the daily assignments, the student workbook gives an introduction, a reference guide, a list of abbreviations, and a sample of a student’s work, to demonstrate the correct format for completing the assignments. It is three-hole punched, ready to be inserted into a three-ring binder.

The author is a high school English teacher who has used this approach in her classroom to help students remember grammar.  She has devoted 27 pages of the teacher guide to explaining the program, how it works, and how to use Daily Grammar Practice. It is clearly designed to be used in a classroom setting, but it would be easy to adapt to a home school.  Instead of learning one concept at a time in isolation, the program progresses from easy to more difficult concepts, spiraling back to the concepts previously covered.

While this product is not intended to be an exhaustive discussion of all of the principles of grammar, it does well in what it sets out to do. It provides a short, daily exercise in grammar to help the concepts sink in for students. Using Daily Grammar Practice would help any student to become more familiar with the grammar concepts necessary for writing well. The publisher’s website provides a scope and sequence to help you choose the grade level appropriate for your student. A parent with a weak grammar background might need to keep a more thorough grammar text on hand to give herself an in-depth explanation of some concepts.
