Successful Puppet Making Review by Lisa Barthuly & Family

Valerie Bendt

Successful Puppet Making is another winner from Valerie Bendt! This book, almost 200 pages worth, is packed with puppet patterns, instructions for each puppet, supplies lists, poems that incorporate the puppet you are making, tons of book suggestions, and ideas for helping our little ones create or interpret stories, through PLAY! Also included are directions for sewing the puppets, making puppet theatres and puppet theatre scenes.

Puppets are easy to make, and there are instructions and patterns for 24 animals! Animals on the Farm include cows, Sheep, Pigs, Cats, Dogs, Horses, Ducks and Hens. Animals in the Woods include Mice, Rabbits, Squirrels, Raccoons, Owls, Foxes, Deer, and Bears. Animals in the Jungle include: Frogs, Snakes, Monkeys, Parrots, Hippos, Elephants, Lions and Tigers~Oh MY! Puppets can be made with colorful felt or construction paper; we found felt to be much easier to work with (just because paper tears so easily). The puppets turn out beautifully, and are SO simple to make; even my 4-year-old does these, with a bit of assistance. The children love to make the puppets and of course act out stories! This is a great book that encourages hands on, fun learning! The whole family has enjoyed this book, the making of the puppets, making our own 'puppet theatre' (AKA an old box, complete with a sheet for the curtain) even making and passing out tickets for 'the next big show! Ths book makes a great supplement to a younger years curriculum, or for just plain fun!
