Language Arts at Home: The Homeschoolers Guide to Teaching English Grammar, Composition, and Literature Appreciation Review by Stephanie D. Scarborough

Language Arts at Home is designed "to provide the confidence and the resources you need to teach your children grammar and composition with what they're already reading." This is especially refreshing to me since I believe that we learn better when new ideas and concepts can be attached to those we already know. Children will see the answer to the age-old question, " Why do we have to learn this?"

As stated in the subtitle, this is a guidebook, not a textbook for your students. Lessons and assignments are not included. Each grade level is listed with an overall goal for language arts, a list of concepts to introduce or master, and a resource list to explain these concepts. Suggested activities include copy work, dictation, and memorization and recitation.

The book would be ideal for a person starting to homeschool and planning to continue through high school. However, you could adapt it to your needs if you are midway through your journey. It is an excellent resource for those who love the holistic approach offered by unit studies but worry that they will "leave something out." This guide also serves as a reminder that each year we probe deeper into concepts from the year before.

Language Arts at Home: The Homeschoolers Guide to Teaching English Grammar, Composition, and Literature Appreciation would be a welcome addition to any homeschool library. It really serves to educate the parent as to what to teach, when, and to what extent.
