This is Book 1 in the "Crown and Covenant" series. The setting is Scotland in 1666. Fourteen-year-old Duncan M'Kethe's family remains true to their faith while fighting against supporters of England's King Charles II, who oppresses the Covenanters because they believe that only Jesus can be King of the church.

While we have gained much from our English heritage, there were some rough spots along the way. King James I is remembered primarily for his authorization of the famous 1611 English Bible translation, but it was his persecution of those who differed from him religiously that led the Pilgrims to come to America. This same kind of intolerance on the part of some of his successors eventually resulted in the American Revolution. One does not have to agree with all the theological beliefs of the Scottish Presbyterian Covenanters to appreciate their courage and conviction to stand up for what they believed whatever the consequences.

This book is filled with excitement, adventure, and important lessons such as loving even our enemies. The activities of the fictional M'Kethe family are interwoven with the actual historical events in which Sir James Turner, former Covenanter turned military leader for King Charles, led the persecution of the Covenanters. We loved this book. It is recommended by R. C. Sproul, Jr., and George Grant. Language level: nothing objectionable. Ages: intended for 10-14 but suitable for everyone. My recommendation: excellent.
