The Homeschooling Revolution Review by Christine Field

Perhaps you have read things by Dr. Lyman. If you have read about homeschooling in publications such as the Wall Street Journal or the Boston Herald, chances are she was the author. She has also been published in the Home School Researcher and by the Cato Institute of Washington, D.C.

She is also the mother of two grown sons. She brings this personal and professional expertise to this classic book, The Homeschooling Revolution. After a brief explanation of what homeschooling is, she takes us through the history of the movement, beginning with Dr. Raymond Moore and John Holt. Another section details some of the legal and political challenges to homeschooling. Some of her most compelling arguments are made in her chapters on socialization and academics.

Two chapters are devoted to homeschoolers as a market. We have grown in terms of media attention as well as becoming the target of marketers. The book is rounded out with some studies and profiles of homeschooling families.

We all know how important homeschooling is to our families. This book is a great reminder of how important it is to our nation as well. It closes with a quote from the son of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who observed, "The kind of things homeschoolers are doing may be the saving grace of our nation." This is a good reminder to all of us who are toiling in our homes. We are blessing our families. We are impacting the nation.
