A Guide to Teaching Grammar Using The Principle Approach Review by Kim Kargbo

This book is a reference book for teachers in how to apply the Principle Approach, founded by Rosalie Slater. The Principle Approach uses the principles of "research, reasoning, relating, and recording" to study any subject using God's Word as the primary text. Mrs. Robbins applies this approach to the study of grammar, beginning with the premise that grammar was created by God to help us understand His Word and live out His character in all aspects of life.

I love grammar, and I found the teaching of this principle instructive. However, in my years of homeschooling, I have rarely found a homeschool mom who shares my love of grammar. For those who have an aversion to grammar in general, this book would be tedious at best. Mrs. Robbins obviously loves grammar as well and believes that the study of it is a spiritual exercise. The logic of her argument cannot be refuted when you understand her reasoning. But I am sure there are many more homeschoolers who would find the book boring than those who would find it intriguing.

There is very little hands-on help or practical instruction within this manual. The bulk of the content is theoretical. While it is instructive in its philosophy, it is not very instructive in its application. I would have appreciated a bit more information on how to apply the Principle Approach to the teaching of grammar. The last three pages of the book talk about using a notebook for the study of grammar, but there is very little information on how to do that. It mentions setting up the notebook and why a notebook is better than a workbook for the study of grammar, but there is no instruction of how to use it.

For anyone who is looking for instruction on how to apply a biblical view to grammar, or how grammar can be glorifying to God, this is a valuable resource. For someone looking for a "how-to" book for teaching grammar, this book would be a disappointment. When taken for its content, it would be very instructive for a homeschooling mom who wanted to revitalize her own understanding of grammar and be inspired to teach her children to learn grammar with a mind toward glorifying God.
