Scrap and Learn Pirates Kit! Is a hands-on learning scrapbooking activity about pirates. Included in the kit are a resource book that lists pirate books, movies, and websites for kids ages 4-18; 4 x 6 postcards, (7) 8 x 10 and (4) 12 x 12 sheets of scrapbooking paper (both plain and pirate themed), and pirate embellishments (stickers, chipboard letters, cut outs, pirate coins, and more.) All you need to add are a notebook, page protectors, double sided tape or other adhesive, scissors, and your creativity. A Scrap and Learn kit would be a great addition to a lapbook or unit study journal.

Step-by-step instructions for putting the scrapbook together can be found at http://www.scrapandlearn.com/articles/articles_takingIntoTheClassroom.html. Make sure you also visit the gallery to gather some ideas on how to assemble a kit. There is no set way to do it.

I am a long-time scrapbooker, but I have never scrapbooked to learn about a subject. I applaud Scrap and Learn for making scrapbooking educationally friendly. In just a few hours, your child can produce several pirate themed scrapbook pages to culminate a unit on pirates. You could also use this kit to scrapbook a beach vacation or a visit to a pirate-themed fun park.

My children are 9, 13, 17, and 19. The 9-year-old had the most fun with the kit because he was not concerned about using "proper" scrapbooking techniques. He basically just cut and taped in a random pattern. My older children are more precise (probably because they love to scrapbook their vacations, parties, and school activities). A middle school student with no prior scrapbooking experience could create a wonderful 4 to 6-page educational keepsake in a few hours. A younger student would need more help and more time.

I really like the quality of the materials in the kit. The papers are rich and heavyweight, nothing at all like the cheap scrapbook papers you would find at a discount store. The embellishments are fun. My kit included several pieces of candy, which I would not recommend adding to any scrapbook (they are an insect attractor). But they would be a nice after scrapbook treat. Way to go, Scrap and Learn!
