We had the pleasure of hearing master storyteller Jim Weiss at a homeschool convention a few years ago. Storytelling has been a wonderful educational tool since the beginning of time and was clearly a favorite teaching tool of Jesus. Jim Weiss has a true talent for turning the names and dates of history into compelling stories that will be remembered long after the story is over. He and his brother, Randy Weiss, started Greathall Publications to help bring history and literature to life. I reviewed his audio CD Thomas Jefferson's America ($13.45), which gives a delightful, historically accurate account of the amazing life of the primary author of the Declaration of Independence.

Not only did we learn a tremendous amount about Thomas Jefferson from this fascinating story, but we also learned about many other founding fathers and their contemporaries, such as George Washington, John Adams, Lafayette, and James Monroe. We were particularly interested in the amazing friendship and animosity between Jefferson and John Adams, who both died fifty years to the day after the Declaration of Independence was signed. Jim Weiss masterfully weaves historical information with the drama and essence of people and events. We were all mesmerized as we learned about this incredibly talented, dynamic, brilliant, and moral man who played such a pivotal role in the founding of our great nation!

My one complaint is that the story left us wanting to know more! While the 74-minute story was certainly thorough, we would have enjoyed a longer story with even more of the richness of Thomas Jefferson's incredible life, but perhaps it is good to leave your audience a little hungry for more! I would highly recommend Thomas Jefferson's America if you are looking for a compelling and historically accurate way to teach your children about one of our country's most important founding fathers.
