Charlie Zahm: An Evening of Classic Melodies

Charlie Zahm is a singer and songwriter with a tremendous gift for communicating the beauty and simplicity of Celtic, Maritime, and Early American music. His rich baritone is pleasant to listen to, and it is obvious that he has an emotional connection with the music he shares. Mr. Zahm's own Scottish and Irish heritage figure largely into his musical choices. Watching him, one gets the feeling that he has stepped out of those traditions and into the present. In fact, Mr. Zahm has a degree in history, very obviously giving his musical interpretations a particular depth.

Charlie Zahm: An Evening of Classic Melodies, is a beautifully rendered DVD recording of a live concert given at the Milburn Stone Theater in North East, Maryland, in February 2007. Charlie and his band (fiddle, guitar, bass, and percussion) perform 19 classic songs such as "Be Thou My Vision," "Loch Lomond," and "All Through the Night." The performances are impeccable; the musicians are obviously experienced and accomplished, and their presence together is really quite delightful to watch.

I am a musician, having my Bachelor's Degree in Voice. Admittedly, my expectations can be unreasonably high. Not knowing what to expect of either Mr. Zahm or this DVD, I was immediately drawn to the full sounds of his band, his beautiful voice, his endearing stage presence, and the whole production in general. Franklin Springs Media did a superb job putting this DVD together.

Not to be missed are the special features: "Charlie Zahm: The Man and His Music," "Building a Song," and a production slide show of the concert. If you have young musicians in your home, you'll want them to see "Building a Song." Charlie and the band build their rendition of "Waltzing Matilda" from square one: Charlie's voice and guitar. Experiencing such excellent musicians building a song is invaluable to young ones and also very interesting to the rest of us.

Charlie Zahm: An Evening of Classic Melodies is a DVD to gather around and enjoy, to play softly in the background as you go about your day, and to inspire the budding musician and historian in your home.
