101 Words Your Child Will Spell by the End of Grade 1 is a great product; it contains a collection of word lists, spelling tips, activities, and answer keys. Also included in this resource is a CD-ROM with activities to coincide with the contents of the book. All that is needed are some writing utensils and a computer to use the software. The activities include matching, finding the correct word, fill in the blank, and practice writing.

There are no specific directions as to the correct way to use this resource. Focusing on the word lists is good place to start. Using visualization techniques to memorize the spellings will help as well, prior to starting the activities. Taking the activities page by page will help your child learn new ways to recognize the words. Then, the software provides an excellent tool for expanding your child's learning potential. The product is specifically geared toward first graders. It is written mostly from a traditional method of teaching, although the spelling tips included in the beginning of the book do include suggestions for multiple types of learners.

I enjoyed using this curriculum. The children enjoyed it and were able to gain spelling skills while engaging in the workbook. Some of the words were difficult for them, so I would encourage parents wanting to use this product to be sure that their child is comfortable with reading words on a first grade level.

I would recommend this product for anyone whose first grader is excelling in reading but could use some motivation in spelling. The activities are challenging and fun and are a great way to introduce your child to working independently.
