The Bald Eagle's View of American History

By C. H. Coleman

85 Main Street
Watertown, MA 02472

Combining subjects is not an uncommon approach to teaching science or history, but this 48-page softcover book does it in a unique, beautiful way. As the title implies, the book covers some of the major historical events of the United States in fifteen very short chapters from the Ice Age to the moon landing. Woven through the chapters is the theme of the bald eagle and pictures of US postage stamps. The author's notes at the end of the book including a great deal of additional information about these two topics as well as suggested resources and a timeline. (One should note the timeline begins with the date 40,000 BCE.)

This would be a good book for older elementary or middle school children. It would be a fun addition to a unit study since it combines nature with history.

C. H. Coleman writes in a comfortable voice that immediately draws the reader in. The foreword, written in first person, tells us why he wrote this book and how he started collecting stamps. The book is decorated with postage stamp images as well as watercolor and colored-pencil illustrations. Although not all of the stamps have eagles on them, the text weaves the bald eagle motif throughout the storyline.

This book may very well be the beginning of a stamp-collecting hobby in addition to a great introduction or conclusion to a study of United States history.
