Maya & Miguel, Best Friends is one of three debut music CD titles based on the popular Maya & Miguel series on PBS KIDS GO! The intent of these CDs is to "promote multicultural understanding and friendship."

I'm not sure exactly what I was expecting when I chose to review this CD, but it wasn't what I got. Admittedly, we do not have television and, therefore, are not familiar with Maya & Miguel. However, we have been working at learning Spanish, and I thought these music CDs might be a fun and easy way to sneak some in. Unfortunately, there is no Spanish on the CD. All songs are in English.

The title of the CD is Best Friends, and I expected the focus to be the aforementioned "multicultural understanding and friendship." While some of the songs do focus on friendship, several are obviously "love songs." In fact, the CD cover says, "Our 14 Favorite Love Songs." Titles include:

1. Beautiful Life
2. Blowin' in the Wind
3. Bridge over Troubled Waters
4. Graduation (Friends Forever)
5. Happy Together
6. I Wanna Be with You
7. I'd Like to Teach the World to Sing
8. Imagine
9. Lean on Me
10. Love Don't Cost a Thing
11. Stop! In the Name of Love
12. We Are Family
13. We Are the World
14. You've Got a Friend

While some of the soundtracks are fun and appropriate, several included lyrics I wasn't especially fond of, especially for the 4-8 age range the CDs are recommended for. If you are familiar with Maya & Miguel, you may enjoy the singing. Personally, I found it high pitched and difficult to listen to for very long. The music, however, was restrained and pleasant. The vocals are definitely the focus of the CD.

The 45-minute CD is reasonably priced at $7.98. However, I'd have to say that unless you have a child who is a die-hard Maya & Miguel fan, it's unlikely that it will be a hit with your 4 to 8-year-old.
