You’ve Got STEAM—and You Don’t Even Know It

Hey, Mama!

Can I let you in on a little secret? You’re probably already teaching STEAM. That baking experiment that bubbled over? Science. The birdhouse your son built with Dad? Engineering. The photo your daughter edited on the laptop? Technology and Art in the same afternoon. You’re doing it. You just didn’t have a name for it.

STEAM—Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math—sounds intimidating until you realize it’s just curiosity with a plan behind it. And here’s the really good news: SchoolhouseTeachers.com has it all covered for you, from preschool through 12th grade.

Want science? There’s Botany, Dinosaurs and the Bible, the full Exploring God’s World series, and even a Pre-Med Center for your high schoolers. Technology? Web Game Design, Podcasting to Change the World, Building Blocks of Computer Science. Engineering and design? Hands-On Architecture and Introduction to Architecture. Art? A whole gorgeous section—Studio Art for Teens, ArtAchieve, Drawing with Realism, and more. And math runs the full ladder from kindergarten counting to calculus.

“And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men;” (Colossians 3:23). That includes science labs at the kitchen table, Mama. It counts. It matters.

Right now, you can get a full year of SchoolhouseTeachers.com—the whole family, every course—for over $100 off with coupon code BIRTHDAY250 at schoolhouseteachers.com/bright-beginnings. Your STEAM classroom is waiting.

His hand is on your head, Mama. Always.

GUEST CONTRIBUTOR

Nicole Jeffery, Director, Axiom Science

High School Chemistry, Made Easy

Feeling nervous about teaching high school chemistry? Worried you won’t understand the ideas you’re trying to teach? If so, you’re definitely not alone. Many home educators feel confident teaching subjects like reading or history. But science? That can feel intimidating. With all the abstract concepts, unfamiliar terms, and complicated experiments—and of course the math—even experienced homeschoolers can start to wonder if they’re really equipped to teach it well.

But giving your children a top-class science education is actually much more achievable than you think.

You don’t need to be an expert to make science work at home. What you actually need is a resource with clear explanations, content that builds step by step, and a format that keeps your children engaged. And, of course, they’ll learn best when they’re actively involved—watching simulations, thinking about questions, and reinforcing ideas through hands-on practical work.

So you don’t need to teach everything yourself! Your role can be as a facilitator—enabling and supporting your child’s learning, but not necessarily teaching.

After all, no one’s expecting you to be a specialist at everything, and your child’s learning should never depend on your expertise alone. When science is approached this way—as a supported journey rather than a test of parental expertise—it becomes far less daunting, and far more doable (and enjoyable!) for everyone involved.

That’s exactly why we created Axiom Science.

We want to help you provide the best possible chemistry education for the children you love. With 191 videos and 50 self-graded quizzes, we handle all the teaching. Plus, there are 20 home-friendly experiments, and simple progress-tracking tools so you can see your child’s progress and encourage them along the way.

Why not try our free preview lessons today, and see for yourself whether Axiom Science works for you?

Todd Wilson

Don’t Lose STEAM!

I don’t mean to brag, but I am the proud parent of extremely gifted children. I mean, one of my kids is great with children, one smiles almost constantly, and yet another one can burp his ABC’s.

That’s the cool thing about children; they’re all gifted. After all, that’s how God delivers them—as gifts, endowing each child with a specific gift designed to build up the body of Christ, even those kids who draw (art), cook (chemistry), work on cars (mechanics), build (engineering), pick up bugs and snakes (etymology) without flinching, and kids who are good at picking weeds (botany, agriculture) are equally valued and successful as they utilize these STEAM subjects in their natural, everyday life of homeschooling.

We incorporated STEAM in these and other non-traditional ways. We used these subjects in our homeschool by running a small business (using math skills), building websites (technology), creating games, and drawing cartoons. STEAM wasn’t just an acronym in our homeschool, it was how we lived.

We incorporated a lot of STEAM into our homeschool life, we just didn’t call it that. We did what God put in us to do, and homeschooling allowed those gifts to flourish.

That’s what homeschooling is all about. And the greatest resource for training your very gifted child is . . . your home.

Be real,
Todd

It’s Already Included!

If the word “STEAM” feels like a heavy expectation, here is a secret: you’re likely already doing it. By high school, teaching Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math isn’t about expensive lab equipment—it’s about applied curiosity. When we move from textbooks to projects, “hard” subjects become practical tools.

The trick to making it “easy” is to stop treating these as five separate subjects. Instead, let’s look at them as tools for cool projects your teen actually cares about. When they’re invested in the “what,” they’ll figure out the “how.”

Three Practical Project Ideas:

  • The Culinary Lab (S-M): Have a teen who loves a good steak? Use sous vide cooking to explore the Science of thermodynamics and protein denaturation. Calculating the perfect time-to-temperature ratio is Math you can eat!
  • The Side-Hustle Startup (T-A-M): If your teen is eyeing a business career, have them design a logo and set up a basic website. Using design software is Art and Technology, while figuring out profit margins and shipping logistics is high-level Math in the real world.
  • The Smart Backyard (S-T-E-M): Does the porch light flicker? Is the gate dragging? Task your teen with the repair. Troubleshooting electrical circuits or re-engineering a hinge are Engineering and Physics at their most practical.

You don’t need a PhD to lead a STEAM-rich household. You just need to provide the space, the supplies, and permission to “fail forward.” Every broken prototype is just a lesson in the scientific method. You’ve got this!

STEAM Doesn’t Require MORE

When I ask parents what they want for their homeschool, many share they want to be intentional, enjoy time together, finish school earlier, and do more labs/projects as a family. So they don’t want to add extra schoolwork which can be stressful and overwhelming.

Well, let me encourage you that STEAM subjects don’t have to be extra work. They can be incorporated into what you’re already doing, freeing up extra time and having fun experiences together as you work on enjoyable projects. Focused, consolidated, educational, memorable, and fun!

You see, whatever the subject, you can add science, experiments, and crafts to it.

History? You can study inventions made during that time period, what plants and animals were in the area, or how food was grown and prepared.

Music? Look at how sounds are made by different instruments. What’s the physics of musical notes? How does the ear work?

Literature? Myth-bust to see if scenes in a story could actually happen. Make models of a location in the story. Study the geography of the area where the story takes place. Build 3D models of robots, dinosaurs, or other creatures in a story based solely on the book description.

These then become creative experiences instead of another school subject in your day. Your kids have tangible ways to connect scientific concepts to whatever they’re learning about.

And guess what? Doing this will also meet the homeschool “wish list” I mentioned earlier. Incorporating STEAM subjects into your homeschool? DONE!
