Introduction to Architecture introduces students to the fascinating world of architecture through thirty-seven engaging lessons. Designed for middle and high school students, this comprehensive homeschool curriculum explores the art and science of designing and building the structures that shape our lives—places where we live, work, worship, travel, and explore.
Students will examine the basic components of architecture and the science behind the stability of structures such as skyscrapers, bridges, cathedrals, homes, castles, and sports arenas. They will also gain insight into the architects behind these marvels (where applicable), the historical context in which they were built, and the function each structure serves. Iconic structures from around the world and across time that students will study include the Pyramids, Pantheon, Parthenon, Colosseum, Petra, and the Great Wall of China. Each lesson explores not only the form and function of these structures but also the innovation and engineering that made them possible.
The curriculum includes a variety of engaging learning tools such as reading assignments, videos, map activities, and hands-on projects. Students will develop an understanding of how architecture influences our environment and daily life, while also considering architecture’s role in city planning, space organization, and cultural expression. The curriculum concludes with a look into the field of architecture as a career—examining job duties, educational pathways, and future employment opportunities. By the end, students will have a broad understanding of architecture’s essential components, historical significance, scientific principles, and cultural impact.
The Introduction to Architecture homeschool curriculum is worth 1.0 academic credits upon successful completion of all reading assignments, videos, map activities, and hands-on activities, depending on how many hours are devoted to the assignments. Typically, 160 to 180 hours represent a full credit. Please check your state’s academic requirements.
