Dia De Los Muertos is a picture book all about the celebration of the Day of the Dead which takes place in Mexico and other Latin American countries on November 1 or 2. The story takes the reader through the preparations for this celebratory day in Latin American communities. The journey begins with the adorning of the altars at the start of the day to the exit of the ancestors at the end of the night.
Carles Ballesteros uses vibrant colors to draw the reader into the story of the cultural celebration. The illustrations reminded me of the candy skulls, calaveras, which are a significant part of the festivities. The illustrations are drawn in a fun, whimsical style.
I found this picture book to be a nice introduction to one of Latin America’s well-known holidays. The story is written in English, but includes Spanish terms throughout. The Spanish vocabulary included serves as a nice refresher for those who know some Spanish, and a mini-lesson for those who do not. Dia De Los Muertos retails for $16.99.
