Civil War, The Review by Jennifer Pepito

Pat Wesolowski
ISBN 0-9646685-1-3

Our family had the pleasure of using The Civil War unit study by Pat Wesolowski, while doing our own study of the civil war. This in-depth and thorough resource is packed with facts, charts, battle summaries, and much more. We were soon engrossed in the study of this tragic war, and with this book as a guide, amazed at how much we learned. The book is divided into 14 chapters, with each chapter laying out a particular field of study. These include a chapter on creating a newsletter, timeline, and various charts relating to the economics of the time as well as statistics from various battles. It also includes ideas for geography, a debate, language arts, a great quiz as well as many other fascinating activities and topics. There is an extensive book list as well as a blank timeline and maps to be completed by your students. Although this unit study seems ideal for your older elementary through high school students, because of its masterful coverage of facts and emphasis on writing, I used it with great enjoyment with my younger students. This is an important part of our history and it deserves more careful study than simply reading a biography of Abraham Lincoln. North Carolina alone lost 20,000 men and 36,000 of the African Americans who fought for the north died. This unit study is a valuable aid in examining this sobering part of our history.
