Singing with the Banjo: Songs and Accompaniment Clawhammer Style (DVD) Review by Jennifer Golombisky

Taught by Cathy Fink
Homespun Tapes
PO Box 340
Woodstock, NY 12498

Singing with the Banjo is a DVD designed for people who are comfortable with clawhammer-style strumming of the banjo. If you have practiced your clawhammer banjo for a while and feel ready to take on new techniques, Cathy Fink will show you how. An entertaining and inspiring artist, Cathy plays by ear, and she uses that method in her teaching. She will teach you valuable skills you will need to know when singing with your banjo or when accompanying someone else, such as how to use a capo and how to find the right key for your voice. You will also learn about alternate tunings and how to find melody notes within chords.

More advanced techniques will take your playing to a new level, and this DVD will show them to you. For the left hand there are the hammer-on, pull-off, and slide, which Cathy Fink covers right away. Right-hand techniques, like double-thumbing and various embellishments, come later in the course.

By the time you finish Singing with the Banjo, you will be a skilled banjo player, fully qualified to knock the socks off anyone who hears you. If you have started learning the clawhammer banjo, don't stop! Keep going and sound like a pro with Singing with the Banjo!
