Professor Van Dusen The Thinking Machine Review by Tom Parsons

By Jacques Futrelle

His logic is inescapable. No problem is too difficult for him to solve. Criminals don't stand a chance against the dazzling intellect of Professor Augustus S. F. X. Van Dusen a.k.a. The Thinking Machine.

First written by journalist Jacques Futrelle in the early 1900's as a series of short stories, these mysteries appeared in publications such as the Saturday Evening Post and other periodicals. Now thanks to Journey Forth, ten of these classic mystery stories are available in a single volume.

Professor Van Dusen, along with his close friend reporter Hutchinson Hatch, embark on a series of adventures that require the professor to rely on his superior deductive reasoning to solve the most complicated of mysteries.

These stories will no doubt delight older kids, especially those that enjoy a good mystery. While entertaining the reader they also help students understand the importance of using logic and observation to put clues together to solve various puzzles.

For parents who want to introduce their older students to logic, this is an entertaining way to tackle teaching a difficult subject.
