The Calling

The Calling

By Stephanie Scarborough

Ephesians 4:1 “As a prisoner for the Lord, then, I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received. 2Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love.”

I had a wonderful yet very challenging school year. It was my 3rd year of homeschooling, two years of which I had been battling a serious medical condition. I write this to remind you (as well as myself) that homeschooling is a calling from God, which we choose to accept in obedience to Him.

My condition had worsened and the new medications were making it very hard to accomplish any “school” but there was still much to be learned.

As I dealt with the pain and limitations I was presented with, He taught life lessons that nobody would choose, but those that cannot be learned with books other than The Book. I learned and am learning to be patient, flexible, and compassionate with myself — a hard lesson for a mom. My children are learning not only their school subjects but also heart lessons that only our loving God can provide.

During this period of time, one of my precious children was diagnosed with a learning disability. I felt so sad for my little one and over-whelmed by the additional time this would require to help, but again God has His plans.

I began to consider sending the children to school, but suddenly the next month, I had the best month I’d had in a long time. I totally tossed out the idea of school anywhere but home. Expressing the love and depth of emotions I have for my little ones and being surrounded by the love of my children brings true joy. Unfortunately, I began to feel bad again; however, I was reminded of what God had done in the past and I pray I will not forget that it is He who carries me through this journey.

Gently, God reminded me that I had not been released from my calling of being a homeschooling mom. A calling I accept and know that He will provide for my inabilities just as he did for Moses, Mary, Job, Joseph and many others. Even Christ relied on the strength of the Father. I am thankful for the lives and the lessons God has recorded in the Bible so I can be assured of His provision. Humbly, I admit that I too am being used. I am a vessel He has chosen and He will accomplish His purposes in the lives of those around me as well as in my own life.

I continue in my 4th year of homeschooling still battling my health but grateful to God for the opportunities He has given me. My husband, children, friends and church help me accomplish God’s plans in my life. He definitely provides for those He calls.

Prayer: “Lord, as we answer the call, remind us that it is You who carries us through the journey.”
