Can your little one count to 100? Or maybe you remember when your older kids were at that stage. Counting to 100 is an impressive feat for young children! You’ve probably noticed the intense concentration as a child calls out the numbers in order from 1 to 100. Upon completion of the task, a beaming smile replaces the focused look, and a delighted shout of “one hundred!” can be heard. Once the impressive recitation is mastered, families may hear their little one proudly performing the count to 100 over and over for any willing audience. What a milestone! It’s just one of many milestones you have the joy of witnessing as a homeschool family, simply because you’ve chosen to spend your days together.

Marking the completion of 100 days of school is another milestone; one that homeschoolers can creatively celebrate. Attach 100 stickers to decorate a 100th day poster, or pop 100 pieces of popcorn into your mouths on the 100th day of school. Homeschoolers are innovative and can come up with dozens of ways to mark the milestone. If your school year started at the beginning of September, your 100th day celebration may take place in early February. Whenever your first 100 days happen though, you can celebrate the gift of learning together at home. It doesn’t matter if those days felt almost perfect or maybe a little rough; your kids are learning from the very best teacher for them—you! Through good days and bad, they know they can count on your love and care.

The Old Schoolhouse® Magazine is counting to 100, too. Our Winter 2021/2022 issue happens to be our 100th issue. That’s something to rejoice over! We give thanks to the Lord for opportunities to reach homeschool families with ideas and reassurance through 100 publications and counting. We love hearing from parents who treasure their collection of The Old Schoolhouse® Magazine and keep each issue to turn to again and again. As we continue to fill our pages with inspiration and answers, we welcome the many new families who have discovered the joy of home education recently.

Our 100th issue is full of great material for you: workbooks vs. living books, learning through literature, raising a reader, and Charlotte Mason homeschooling. It features trains and transportation and also covers babies and preschoolers, music, classical education, and more. Resource guides are included for foreign language learning and also for literature and curriculum. Count on a steady stream of homeschool encouragement with a subscription to The Old Schoolhouse® Magazine delivered to your door quarterly. Start your subscription with the 100th issue (Winter 2021/2022) for $29/ year US ($59/year Canada/International) or two years for $39 US ($99/2 years Canada/International). Or grab a single issue now for $15 US ($25 Canada/International). Homeschool-store.com

She’s not a blogger or a curriculum writer, and there’s no chance you’ve heard her speak at a homeschool convention, but Charlotte Mason remains ever the influencer, even though her life was lived a century ago. Why? Her enduring educational philosophies resonate with homeschoolers. You may be familiar with her name. You may even be implementing her ideas without realizing it.

Charlotte Mason is often associated with the term “living books” and the phrase “laying down the rails” regarding habit formation. She’s also well known for her ideas on nature study and narration—concepts that make homeschool life an exceptional choice. We would probably all be following Charlotte Mason on social media were she here today. How wonderful to know that she herself followed God! Perhaps that’s why her influence is enduring.

Your influence is enduring, too, Mama! The time and love you pour into your children as you teach them daily is beyond value. There is no one better than you for the job. Your children are home where they belong, learning from you as you keep them on the rails.

More on Charlotte Mason homeschooling is waiting for you inside the pages of the Winter edition of The Old Schoolhouse® Magazine. Other topics you’re sure to love in this coming issue: trains and transportation, workbooks vs. living books, learning through literature, raising a reader, babies and preschoolers, classical education, music, art, and more. You’ll find a resource guide on foreign language learning and another resource guide on literature and curriculum. Just like every issue of The Old Schoolhouse Magazine®, this one is a keeper! Open it up to invest in your own education on all things homeschool and save it for future reference and encouragement.

While The Old Schoolhouse® Magazine hasn’t been around quite as long as the name of Charlotte Mason, we are grateful to be celebrating twenty years of supporting homeschooling families! There is more to celebrate, too—our Winter 2021/2022 issue is our 100th issue! We’ve got a presale for you now through the end of October. Start a one-year subscription with the Winter issue for only $26.10 US. (International subscriptions are $44.10.) Homeschool-store.com
