I have been finding that spending time in my Bible is a good thing. I am always yearning to learn more about it. I have been doing just that with Bruce Baker’s Spiritual Maturity: The Road to Wonderland.

Spiritual Maturity is a 300+ page paperback book that takes the spiritual lessons from Chafer’s He That is Spiritual, from 1918, and brings those lessons to the modern day in words that we can understand and grow in our spiritual maturity.

There are three different parts to this book. The first of these is Living in Canaan. This is a fictional story about a woman named Christine who is going through things similar to what we could be going through. We see her deal with issues and we watch her grow in her spiritual maturity through her tough times.

Next, we see excerpts from Lewis Carroll’s Wonderland. We follow Alice and see different things that she goes through during her story. These are just short, one-page excerpts that lead us into the chapter and the lesson we are about to learn.

That leads me to the chapters in the book. There are 21 chapters, each with a different lesson for us to learn and study. These lessons are based on the excerpt from Wonderland. They range in length from 6-20 pages. There are Biblical references from the New International Version Bible.

At the end of each chapter, there are 5-8 discussions questions. These are made to go with a group study with the book, but I have found that they are great as thinking points for me to use on my own. I am able to think deeper about what I have learned and even write out my answers in a journal as I go through the book.

I have had a great time reading through this book. I am finding myself slowing down and thinking more about everything that I have read. The discussion questions are great for helping me slow down at the end of each chapter.

I loved that the pages were clean and uncluttered. This allowed for me to take notes as I was reading and even allowed for me to highlight the main points I want to remember. The pages are thick enough that I don’t have to worry about my highlighter bleeding through to the next page.

I love the way this study was presented with the fictional character throughout. This made the lessons hit home. Adding in the excerpts from Wonderland made me more intrigued to see what we would be learning about next. And that was easy enough with the simple writing style that was presented. I didn’t feel lost or overwhelmed with information. Instead, I was able to read the book and actually walk away each day with a new understanding of how to build my spiritual maturity.

If you are looking for a book that will challenge you to grow spiritually, this is the book you are looking for. Even as a busy, homeschooling, work at home mom, I have found the time to read and grow with this book.
