It’s one of those days! You have just spent most of the day driving around running errands and you’re wondering just what you are going to log in that homeschool portfolio. Let’s face it - we all have days where we just can’t seem to get out of the car! Are you going to have to write the day off and find somewhere (who knows when) to make up the lost school day? NO, definitely not if you have recently read the book, Carschooling by Diane Keith. In her new book, this educational advisor and homeschooling guru shares over 350 entertaining games and activities targeted to kids ages 4 to 17. It is an informational, fun-filled array of portable learning for on-the-go parents and children!

Just what exactly is Carschooling? In a quote taken directly from the book,“It is all about turning travel time into learning time.” It is about doing activities that help families spend meaningful time together. Carschooling was written to help families find profitable ways to make the most of their time spent on the road!

The age ranges of the activities presented in the book are grouped into the following levels: Preschool and Kindergarten (ages 3-5), Early Elementary (grades 1-4), Middle and Upper Elementary (grades 5-8), and High School (grades 9-12). Added is a general category, “Family Curriculum,” for all ages/any grade. The subjects that can be covered are science, math, language arts, social sciences, geography, visual and performing arts, foreign languages, and physical education and health. Carschooling even has electives and recess! A sampling includes games on vocational training, high finance, pre-driver’s education, debate, and, believe it or not, home e-car-nomics (yes, that is cooking on your car engine)! This is one creative way to put a new spin on education in your car. With a little forethought and planning, you can turn those long car trips into an entire day at school.

The chapter titled “Getting Organized” couldn’t make things easier for those of you who are up to this unique challenge. Mrs. Keith covers taking care of your “carschool” or “custodial duties,” protecting the upholstery, creating space and keeping organized, car snacks, along with tools and supplies. Much, much more is covered and it notes companies where suggested products or items may be purchased.

This is a very interesting look at making every moment count, not just for school, but making productive use of your time. Who benefits? Both you and your family.
