The Sleeping Flower Review by Amanda Hopkins

Erin Mackey

Finding books that help us learn is always something that I like to do for our homeschool. Sometimes I need a short book for the younger kids. The Sleeping Flower, by Erin Mackey, is just that kind of book that helps talk about science and the seasons.

While reading through this book, we follow a little flower from winter all the way back to winter again. This is a short full-color picture book that is great for 2-6-year-olds. There is one to two simple sentences on one page that goes along with the picture on the adjoining page.

These simple sentences explain what is happening each step of the way through the seasons. We see the flower as she wakes up, enjoys the sun, rain, and animals through the seasons. We finish up with her going back to sleep for the winter.

After reading this book, I was able to talk with my 3 and 6-year-old about how perennials are flowers that come back each summer. We were able to talk about what the flowers need to grow and thrive, as well as how the different animals/insects help the flower to survive. We were able to turn this cute, simple book into a unit study for my youngest learners in the house.

We really enjoyed this book. The girls had me read it to them multiple times since we got it. This is a fun book that really engages the younger kids. Being able to use a book like this to turn into learning is a bonus that I love as a homeschooling mom!
