Training Hearts/Teaching Minds Review by Lisa Barthuly & Family

Training Hearts/Teaching Minds is a devotional for the whole family of solid teaching based on the Westminster Shorter Catechism. This has been one of the best devotional type books I have come across!

I love that this book is easily understood (even for the children for the most part) and in a great format. Training Hearts/Teaching Minds takes a main question on a topic and breaks it down into a six-day study. I enjoy this format because it really gives the time needed to go into detail of topics or issues and allows for discussions to develop. The direct manner and language of the book are refreshing and clear cut. This paperback volume has over 300 pages and enough weekly lessons/devotions for over two years!

Some of the questions posed for study are:

How did God create man?

What is Justification?

How is Christ a King?

What is Sanctification?

What does God require of man?

What introduces the 10 commandments?

How do we keep the Sabbath holy?

What is faith in Jesus Christ?

Who should be baptized?

This is just a handful of the questions discussed! I love that the scripture references are right within the text and not shoved to the back of the book. Since the Bible is the ONLY book out there without error, we may not all agree (depending on theological bent) on everything in the Westminster Shorter Catechism, but this is a wonderful opportunity to explain to our children the history of this Catechism and the men behind it. I do think this is an excellent tool! Starr Meade has made teaching the catechism very simple and very interesting! I would highly recommend this book to anyone. It would make a great family devotional tool, or group study, or just a great personal study; you do not want to miss this book!
