This volume by William J. Bennett covers 1914 to 1989, from "A World at War" to "The Triumph of Freedom." My first impression was that this book could only be read in small portions because it is historical and factual. But as I got into the book, I discovered I could indeed read for some time without tiring because of the little tidbits of information that kept the book interesting.

Written from an American perspective, the book covers both domestic and international events, with lots of behind-the-scenes happenings that were not necessarily publicly known at the time. The author presents both good and bad characteristics of the famous (and some not so famous) men involved in historical events.

I recommend this book for anyone--middle schoolers through adults--who just wants to get a good view on history. It can also be used as a supplement to provide a different perspective on various events. The book is definitely not anti-American or anti-Christian, just factual. And America comes out looking pretty good despite popular opinion.
