R Is for Race: A Stock Car Alphabet is an alphabet picture book about stock car racing. Each spread has a letter of the alphabet, something about racing that starts with that letter, and a simple rhyming couplet. There is also a sidebar with more detail and sometimes another thing or two that begins with that letter. The book gives a well-rounded background of stock car racing. It covers the history of the sport, famous names in racing, and details about cars, tracks, and equipment.

What really stand out are the illustrations. The bright and bold oil paintings are remarkable. My 11-year-old son commented on them after reading the book. Illustrator Jane Gilltrap Bready is a NASCAR-licensed artist, so she knows her way around the racetrack. You can see the speed and excitement on every page.

With the two levels text (rhyme and side-bar), this book has multi-age appeal. Any car aficionado would love it.

Prior to reading this book, my interest in stock car racing was zilch. Now, however, I'm putting "watch the Daytona 500" on my February calendar!
