The Young Scientist Field Journal is a 5 X 7 spiral bound notebook ready to be slipped into a backpack without a lot of extra weight. When the budding naturalist is ready to record, it is sturdy enough to be held in one hand and note any observations with the other.

The notebook begins with a few pages on journaling and how to prepare for an observation session. They include practical suggestions on what to carry in your backpack and also what to observe and how to record it.

The bulk of the journal is a set of six observation worksheets. Each set includes space for the date, location, animal observations, plant observations, weather conditions, drawings, and a graph to help with scale and proportions of the things observed. There are enough worksheets for about twenty hiking adventures.

The journal is useful to help record each hike. At $12.95 it seems a bit pricey. The same outcome could be accomplished with a similar sized notebook from an office supply store. The results would be similar and for most homeschooling families the price more affordable.
