Victoria's Chance

2002 Filmore Ave., Suite #1
Erie, PA 16506

This 12 minute DVD is part of the Ultimate Resource series from Victoria's Chance is the story of a family in Ghana, West Africa, and their struggle to provide a good education for their 12-year-old daughter, Victoria. Victoria's father, a fisherman, never went to school; her mother only went for a couple of years. But Victoria wants to be a doctor, and they work hard to ensure a good education for her. The video describes traditional practices and customs in Ghana among the people group to which Victoria's family belongs. It also describes the differences between public and private education in Ghana. A pdf study guide with pre-viewing questions, a note-taking guide, discussion questions, a quiz, and enrichment activities can be accessed if you open the DVD on your computer.

This DVD is appropriate for any age, but it would be best suited for middle or high school. It could easily be incorporated in a general geography unit, a study of Africa, economics, cultural studies, social studies, or a specific unit study. While not made specifically for homeschools, the DVD is just as suited to a home learning environment as a classroom environment. No modifications are needed.

I love this video (and the whole series!) and think it would be an asset to any homeschool. The technical quality of the video is superb, and the information is valuable for families trying to expand their children's horizons. It would make some great discussion material for the dinner table or an excellent starting point for a study on Ghana, Africa, or education around the world. I can't think of anything not to like about this video. The cost is $25.00, which some families might consider a little pricey for a 12-minute video. It would be an excellent purchase for a co-op.
