3 Tips for Getting to Church on Time

Recently, I wrote a blog post as a reminder of the importance of attending weekly worship service. No matter which day you attend, I believe it is imperative for us to come together for encouragement and fellowship. However, as a wife and mother, I am reminded every week that my lack of preparation can hinder my family’s presence at service. Over the past two months, I have implemented some strategies that aren’t new at all. These quick changes haven’t completely stopped our tardiness but have reduced it tremendously.

  • Prepare your family’s clothing, shoes, and accessories in advance. For some, this might mean the evening before, and others, it may be two days. I get everything together and my husband irons it. Then, I stick socks or a pantyhose into shoes and wrap a belt around the set if necessary. I lay these items out on our couch before bed, for when I wake up in the morning. After breakfast, the children can grab their set and get dressed.
  • Prepare your household for worship by setting the atmosphere in advance. A couple of days prior, remind your children about the date and time of the worship service. Let everybody know your family will be attending, and remind them why you worship together. On the day of the service, play music while everyone gets ready. Pray together before attending the service, asking God to prepare your hearts and minds for the upcoming sermon.
  • Prepare yourself for the task by having time alone with God. You can’t tend to your family if you haven’t taken care of yourself. On Sunday mornings, I apply my makeup before I wake my family, and use that time to pray and listen to scripture, a sermon, or a podcast. Doing this prepares my mind so I can get my family out the door without an attitude.

I find that when I make the time to do these three things, not only are we present for the service, but we are completely prepared with our hearts ready to worship. Church attendance uplifts our spirits, provides a comforting fellowship, and sets the tone for the week. We should be earnest to be present, on time, and available to serve.

Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful. And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.
