The Familyman

I’m sorry. I just can’t talk about teaching multiple levels during this week of July. Actually, I can’t even bring myself to think about homeschooling. Mom, can I encourage you to NOT think about homeschooling either?

This past week I was sitting outside in the sun at our family’s lake cottage and noticed my sister-in-law sitting in a lawn chair with a little slip of paper in her hand jotting down notes. When I asked her what she was doing she said, “Just thinking through the next school year.”

Now, I am most certainly NOT the Holy Spirit. I’m not the authority for her or for you, BUT if I was, I would scream at the top of my lungs, “Stop it! It’s summer and you should be thinking of playing and summer and happy thoughts. The school thoughts will come soon enough, but not YET.”

So let me just transition to something else … like the new year of 2015. As you may or may not know, each year I publish a “You ‘da Dad Daily Calendar” for dads. It’s a page-a-day thing, and it has become a powerful tool in the hands of dads all over the world. Here’s the deal: I need your help.

Can you take 2 minutes to jot down a quick tip that you’d like me to pass on to other men that you wish your husband would do for you or your children? Example: Tell your wife why you’re glad you married her; Tell your hard child that you’re proud of him; Smile more …

Got the idea? So send your tips to me and then go have some summer fun with your children.

Image of Family

Stores that sell everything from apples to furniture polish have changed the way many of us shop. Accomplishing more than one thing in the same amount of time is always appreciated. Wouldn’t it be nice if homeschooling offered something similar?

Would you like some good news–it does! The Old Schoolhouse Magazine’s curriculum arm,, enables you to teach multiple grades simultaneously. Consider just a few of our nearly 100 courses:

  • Literature with Adam Andrews: Adam leads your family through an analysis and discussion of literary works with questions and story charts. His questions range from elementary to high school levels, but he often uses elementary texts as his study focus. This not only proves the value of great, twaddle-free children’s books, but allows you to study with a wide range of ages, tailoring your questions and discussions as needed.
  • Art Techniques with Brenda Ellis: Brenda focuses on one artistic medium each month, giving you step-by-step instructions on how to create your own masterpiece. Students of any age can benefit by her straightforward lessons and consistent encouragement to simply be your best.
  • Classical History with Jennifer Courtney: Jennifer provides a tour of history from ancient times to the fall of Rome. She includes many ways to tailor your study to the ages you have, from elementary through high school.
  • Everyday Easels: This art appreciation study on the Schoolhouse Dailies tab explores a different work of art every two weeks. Projects and assignments are given for multiple grade levels, kindergarten through high school.
  • French with Greg Shone: Greg has two years of French lessons that are straightforward enough for elementary students yet provide enough material for high schoolers.
  • And those are only a few of the courses we offer for the entire family!

“I look forward to THM every Wednesday. I really enjoy Deborah’s articles. For some reason, it must be God, she always writes about what I am needing to hear. Her ability to put scripture and God in the middle of all her articles keeps me coming back. I recently have been enjoying the Youngs’ [articles] because I have a young man (10) in my house. The encouragement of the Youngs is fabulous. I thank God for parents like them that pave the way for parents like myself and my husband.”
