Peculiar People

There is a line that we just don’t cross in this life; it’s the line between rational behaviour and irrational behaviour (a.k.a. craziness).  You might not see the line, but you sure do know when you’ve crossed it. The looks, the stares, you know what I’m talking about!

Our spiritual heritage however, is one of people who ignore that line because they live by faith. It’s an aspect of Christianity that we acknowledge and admire, but seldom want to imitate. We are the spiritual descendants of people who parted seas, marched around enemy walls singing and shouting, danced in the streets as they praised, healed the blind and raised the dead.  That’s what came before us, a long list of ‘irrational’ and ‘impossible’ events!

According to 1 Peter 2:9 we are a royal priesthood and a peculiar people.  Peculiar means strange, different, special. Jesus was no ordinary guy, we all agree on that, but neither was Noah, John the Baptist, Daniel, Paul, Abraham or Esther.  None of these were able to fulfill the call of God for their lives without being different and neither can you or I.

Consider the Apostle Peter. He definitely fell over the line of good judgement when he got out of the boat, defying all logic, reason, and plain common sense. However, Peter was only able to walk on water because Jesus was right there on the water with him. Jesus is the ultimate X-factor!  Hallelujah! Whatever it is, wherever it is, be not afraid because God has gone before you. Healing? Forgiveness? Purity? Freedom? It may seem impossible, but He is already there, on the water, doing the impossible. And He has imparted this power to you, my friend. Step out of the boat to live this beautiful and unusual life in Christ!

“Turn your eyes upon Jesus,

Look full in His wonderful face,

And the things of earth will grow strangely dim

In the light of His glory and grace.”
