Why Teach the Arts?

“Why teach music?” you ask! During my years as a professional violinist and teacher, I have made many observations. I have seen brides in tears as I played their special music, guests at a formal gathering slip into another world as the classics were played, and the homeless at an event remembering gospel songs of their childhood. Many times I have noticed seniors in a nursing facility clap and sing words that have long eluded their conscious memory. Those words to the hymns learned many years ago are sung from the heart and give them hope.

When you combine music and faith, it creates a powerful effect on the mind and soul. Good words are infused into your children’s minds and, try as they might not to think about those positive lyrics, they stay!

Through the music, a solid foundation of the faith is taught. Music penetrates deeply into the mind and soul and is a powerful tool to establish the values that Jesus teaches. Studies can be done showing the importance of music throughout the Bible, especially in the Psalms. God created music to bless us and to be used in worshiping Him. A high calling is to learn to play an instrument skillfully and to serve God through that discipline.

Children struggle to learn the technique of a difficult instrument, but during those moments of total focus, they discover the value of conquering what they may have thought was impossible. Squeals of delight come after their success, and the joy of learning leads to the desire for more.

Provide your children with the gift of music through lessons, like my violin lessons, at SchoolhouseTeachers.com, and by filling your home with music.

Here are some suggestions for making music a part of your homeschool and your life:

  • Listen to music frequently. Have music playing while you do chores, read, play games, etc.
  • Get the wiggles out. Put on a rousing worship or praise song and let your kids dance away some of that pent up energy.
  • Break the monotony on long car rides. Have fun singing together as a family with a variety of songs from silly ones to ones that praise the Lord.
  • Learn to play an instrument. Help your child choose an instrument that he will enjoy mastering.

I encourage you to consider a wonderful adventure in music (and art) and hope that you and your children will find the study of the arts a rewarding endeavor.

Wee Sing

Wee Sing is recognized as one of the world’s most cherished children’s brands.

Wee Sing

Over 35 years ago, two music educators published a children’s songbook and called it Wee Sing. More than 65 million books, audios, live-action videos, and apps later, Wee Sing has become a leader in preschool learning through music.

Teachers Pam Beall and Susan Nipp created that first songbook in 1977 because they were passionate about enriching the lives of kids through music and movement. They knew that music stimulates cognitive, physical, and social development of young children. And through songs, chants, movement, and rhythm, they gain the readiness skills of language, coordination, auditory discrimination, body awareness, rhythmic proficiency, and self-confidence. But in the big picture, kids are just having fun!

Wee Sing has won numerous awards, highlights including:

  • Parent’s Choice
  • National Parenting Center Seal of Approval
  • Telly Silver
  • Dove Foundation “Family-Approved” Seal

And has been featured in numerous publications including:

  • People Magazine
  • The Wall Street Journal
  • USA Today
  • TV Guide
