It’s never too early to learn to write well, and it’s never a bad idea to have fun doing it. Jan May knows this. She is teaching Adventures in Writing, a brand new course on SchoolhouseTeachers.com. Eight- to twelve-year-olds will enjoy this farm-related writing adventure with Daisy the Duck and Moo-Cow Mayor in Mooville. Lessons include easy-to-follow Teachers Notes, student worksheets, farm animal printables with fun facts, farm animal report pages with questions to answer, fun writing activities, and unit study ideas to incorporate science and art. There are ten bite-size lessons that teach students how to create characters, settings, and plots. They will learn about the golden rule of writing, which is “Show, Don’t Tell,” and how to create tension for an interesting plot. Older students can look at the writing process with Karen Robuck in Essay Writing 101. Seven monthly units teach students about common essay forms including expository, biographical, descriptive, personal experience, eyewitness report, and cause and effect. Lessons will look at the purpose and elements of each and provide rubrics for self-evaluation.
