Are you looking for a magazine that is history-focused, geared for young people, thorough and interesting to boot? Learning Through History Magazine might be just what you are looking for.

The 64-page bi-monthly magazine contains a great deal of information on one particular historical event or time period. For example they have covered World War II, The Great War, The Vikings, Byzantine Empire, Ancient Near East, Tudor England, Mesoamerica, and Medieval Japan as well as many more. Written for ages nine and up and featuring many black and white illustrations, photographs, and maps, this magazine will appeal to the whole family.

Every issue includes similar features: a historical timeline for the period covered with that particular issue's relevant events as well as world events happening at the same time, "A Day in the Life During" the particular time period - this is often told from the perspective of a child and is quite fascinating, fifteen stories on various details or aspects of the time period/subject matter in the issue, crafts or art projects, recipes, discussion and essay questions, further resource lists, literature study guides, hands-on activities, Early Learning Units, and web links for more articles and activities.

For example, the World War II issue includes:

  • Editor's Corner
  • History Timeline
  • A Day in the Life During World War II
  • The Rise of Adolph Hitler and National Socialism
  • Singing at the Border: The Kindertransport
  • Blitzkrieg! Germany and the Lightening War
  • Battle of Britain: Life During the Blitz
  • Make Do and Mend: A Campaign to Stop Waste
  • The White Rose: Germans Against Hitler
  • Pearl Harbor: The War Reaches America
  • Franklin Roosevelt's Fireside Chats
  • Dwight D. Eisenhower: Ordinary Man, Extraordinary Leader
  • We Stand Alone: American Paratroopers in World War II
  • The Other D-Day: The Invasion of Southern France
  • A Forecast for Victory: Fighting the Enemy and the Weather
  • She's Making History, Working for Victory!
  • Freedom Denied: Japanese American Internment
  • The Ultimate Weapon: The Ultimate Price
  • Wartime Rations Recipes
  • Literature Study Guide: Jacob's Rescue
  • Literature Study Guide: On a Note of Triumph
  • Early Learning Unit on World War II
At $32 a year, for six issues, that is a lot of information for a reasonable price. The magazine is put together in an appealing manner with a full-color cover. The articles are always interesting and relevant to the study of the time or event. Single issues are also available for purchase if you want to try it out and see if it fits your family's taste and learning style. In our family's opinion, this is a worthy magazine for any homeschool.
